Act 235 Getting Started

The following is a list of steps for getting started towards obtaining your ACT 235 Certification. In order to take the Act 235 training by an PA State Police approved school, you MUST have your approval letter from the PA State Police on the first day of class. There are certain steps you must take to obtain this approval letter. It is strongly recommended that you also review the information available at the PA State Police Lethal Weapons Training Program Site.

  1. Go to a PA State Police Barracks with a completed application and a money order for $80.25. You will be finger printed at this time, which they will use to run a background check on you. Note: CVS sells money orders at a reasonable price.
  2. You will need to complete your Psychological Examination which includes the required MMPI test. My office phone is: 215-947-7867. You can email Dr. Eimer here. I will mail my original psychological examination report to the PA State Police Lethal Weapons Office AND give you a copy for your records.
  3. You will need to go for a Physical Examination performed by a PA licensed physician (M.D. or D.O.). The medical doctor will submit the results directly to the State. It is recommended that you choose a medical doctor who is familiar with the ACT 235 process. You can get your physical exam from Dr. Gary Salzman, D.O. Call Dr. Salzman directly: 215-669-3722.   4. You should receive an approval letter issued by the State within a month. Then, you can sign up for an Act 235 training class. We recommend the following quality schools:

The Act 235 Lethal Weapons Training Act provides for the training and licensing of security guards, protective patrolmen, private detectives and criminal investigators, carrying and using lethal weapons in their employment. The program falls under the executive authority of the Commissioner of the Pennsylvania State Police.

The Act 235 certification process consists of:

IMPORTANT NOTE: You MUST have your application filed with the PA State Police, your psychological examination including MMPI test, and your physical examination completed before your Act 235 authorization letter is issued by the PA State Police to attend Act 235 training.
